The Island

Okay, I tried not to negatively bias this film when I noticed in the title sequence that Michael Bay was the director. I tried not to think of the overblown dramatics of Pearl Harbor or Armageddon. The loud-loud-blow-it-up fun of Bad Boys.

That only lasted about 10 minutes.

I thought this movie was lame. It took me two days to watch it and besides it being hard to keep my attention on it I had to deal with a partially scratched dvd that kept skipping and stopping - forcing me to eject the dvd numerous times to keep watching. Annoying. Just like Michael Bay directing this movie. I tried listening to his audio commentary, he's a little arrogant and I didnt care to hear him congratulate himself on a job well done.

This movie was like watching a bad spoof. It was a conglomeration of other sci-fi movies with a little action thrown in. I-Robot, Matrix, A.I., and Gattaca are some films that come to mind that this movie ripped off in one way or another. Wow, futuristic set and uniforms. Uniformity, bad. Machines and cloning, bad. Morality in the hands of man..one man acting as god. Oh my. I dont even have the energy to sum up this fluff.

Uh. The thing is I think Michael Bay could be an auteur of sorts. If one were to watch his body of work thus far..if you can call it a body of work ..I think there would be similar motifs and themes in the films along with a consistent style of shooting. I might be just spewing crap. Perhaps its just an exhausted editor everytime - imagine Michael Bay standing over an editor smacking him with a belt yelling, "CUT" everytime he wants a jump-cut/cross-cut edit. Poor editor.
